Umrah Visa from India: Documents and Process

Saudi Arabia now issues the Umrah visa electronically, and most Indian pilgrims get theirs through their travel agency. That makes the process simpler than it once was, but it still depends on getting a short list of documents exactly right. Here is what you need and how it runs. Rules change between seasons, so treat this as the outline and confirm the details with your agency.
How Indian pilgrims get the visa
In practice, nearly all Indian pilgrims apply through a travel agency, which submits the application through Saudi Arabia's official systems (the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's Nusuk and Maqam platforms) with a Saudi-licensed partner. The visa comes back as an electronic document, normally a PDF: there is usually no sticker in your passport and no visit to an embassy.
Saudi Arabia has also opened some direct, individual routes through Nusuk for travellers from certain countries. Whether and how that works for Indian passport holders changes, so check Nusuk or ask your agency rather than assuming. Choosing a package keeps the visa, hotels and transport in one place, which is why most pilgrims do.
Documents you need
The list is short, but every item is checked. Your agency uploads these on your behalf:
- A passport valid for at least 6 months from the date you travel, with blank pages
- A recent, sharp passport-size colour photograph on a white background
- A scan of your passport details page, and any other pages the agency asks for
- Confirmed return flight tickets and hotel bookings in Makkah and Madinah (usually part of your package)
- A vaccination certificate. Saudi health rules commonly require proof of quadrivalent meningococcal (ACWY) vaccination, given at least 10 days before arrival and still within its validity period; the length depends on the vaccine type. Confirm the current requirement and get the certificate in good time
How the process works, step by step
- Choose a package and confirm the booking with the agency
- Give the agency your documents, for every traveller, in one go
- The agency applies for the visa on the Saudi system
- You receive the electronic visa. Check every detail: your name exactly as in the passport, the passport number, and the dates and stay period
- Print the visa and carry it with your passport, tickets and hotel vouchers
Processing time and when you cannot get a visa
Once documents are complete, processing can take from a couple of days to a few weeks, depending on the season and on how busy the system is. Allow extra margin around Ramadan and the winter holidays, and do not buy non-refundable tickets of your own before the visa is issued.
Saudi Arabia usually pauses issuing Umrah visas for a period around Hajj, from roughly the middle of the month of Shawwal until Hajj is over. The exact dates are announced each year by the Ministry, which is why you will see no departures in that window. For the other seasons see the best time for Umrah.
What Nusuk is, and what you may need to do on it
Nusuk is the official platform and app for Umrah and visiting the Two Holy Mosques, run by Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. Pilgrims commonly use it to see their visa and package details, and to hold the permits and time slots that apply to performing Umrah and to visiting the Rawdah in Masjid an-Nabawi.
Slots and permits are limited and the rules change, especially around Ramadan and Hajj. Ask your agency whether it books them for you or whether you must. Install the official Nusuk app from your phone's app store before you travel, and be cautious of lookalike websites that sell permits: the official site is nusuk.sa.
What it costs
The visa fee and mandatory insurance are normally bundled into your package price. This is one of the line items worth confirming when you compare packages. Common reasons applications get delayed
Almost all delays trace back to documents: a passport with under 6 months' validity, a blurry or incorrectly sized photo, a name that does not match across the passport and tickets, or a missing vaccination certificate. Check the spelling of your name on every document, including middle names.
One more that catches many families: if your passport shows only one name, tell your agency at the start. The Saudi system commonly expects both a given name and a surname, and a single-name passport can hold an application up.
Women, children and families
Saudi Arabia's rules now allow women to perform Umrah without a mahram. That is separate from two other questions: whether your agency, airline and group will accept a woman travelling alone, and what your madhhab says. Several schools traditionally require a mahram or a trusted group of women for a woman's journey. Confirm both with your agency before you book.
Children travel on their own passports, and infants need their own visa too. Give your agency the full list of travellers up front so every visa is applied for together.
When you arrive
Keep your printed visa, passport and return ticket together for immigration. Your visa states how long you may stay: plan to leave before it ends, because overstaying is penalised.
Common questions
Do I have to go to the Saudi embassy for an Umrah visa?
In most cases no. The visa is applied for electronically by your agency and sent to you as a document. Your agency will tell you if anything must be done in person.
Is the meningitis vaccination compulsory?
