Umrah vs Hajj: Differences, Timing and Rites
Updated 3 min read
Umrah and Hajj both take you to the Haram in Makkah, and they share some rites, so people often confuse them. They are different in ruling, timing and scale. This guide sets them side by side. Nusayr lists Umrah packages only; for Hajj, see the note on how pilgrims from India go below.
The short answer
Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, obligatory once in a lifetime on every Muslim who is able to do it physically and financially, and it can be performed only on set days in the month of Dhul Hijjah. Umrah is a shorter pilgrimage that can be made at other times, and it does not take the place of Hajj.
Side by side
- Ruling. Hajj is obligatory once for those who are able. For Umrah, scholars differ: the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools consider it obligatory once, while the Hanafi and Maliki schools consider it a strongly emphasised sunnah
- Timing. Hajj happens only between the 8th and 13th of Dhul Hijjah. Umrah can be done at almost any time of year, subject to the Saudi visa season
- Rites. Umrah is ihram, tawaf, sa'i and halq or taqsir. Hajj includes those and adds the stay at Mina, standing at Arafat on 9 Dhul Hijjah (the heart of Hajj), the night at Muzdalifah, stoning the jamarat, the sacrifice, and the farewell tawaf
- Duration. The Umrah rites take a few hours and a whole trip is typically about one to two weeks. Hajj has days of rites and the trip is usually several weeks
- Cost and planning. Hajj takes much longer to arrange and costs considerably more. Umrah packages can often be booked a few weeks ahead
Can Umrah count as Hajj?
No. Umrah, even in Ramadan, does not discharge the obligation of Hajj. Many pilgrims perform both on the same trip (tamattu'): Umrah first, then ihram again for Hajj. If you are able to perform Hajj, scholars advise not to delay the obligation; ask a qualified scholar about your own situation.
How pilgrims from India go
Umrah is booked privately through a travel agency, and you can compare packages from travel agencies on Nusayr. Hajj from India is organised through the Haj Committee of India or through registered private tour operators, within the quota Saudi Arabia allots to India each year, so it follows the official Hajj application process and calendar. Always confirm details on the official Haj Committee sources, and be cautious of anyone promising a guaranteed Hajj seat.

Common questions
Is Umrah compulsory?
Scholars differ. The Shafi'i and Hanbali schools hold it is obligatory once in a lifetime; the Hanafi and Maliki schools hold it is a strongly emphasised sunnah. Follow your madhhab or ask a scholar.
Can I perform Umrah during Hajj season?
Saudi Arabia usually pauses Umrah visas for a period around Hajj, so in practice pilgrims travelling on an Umrah visa cannot make Umrah in those weeks. Check the dates announced each year.
Does Nusayr offer Hajj packages?
No. Nusayr lists Umrah packages from Indian travel agencies only.
