Step 1 · Enter Ihram — At the miqat

Ihram is a state you enter, not clothes you wear. From the moment of intention until your hair falls at the end, you are consecrated to Allah — and it must begin before you cross the miqat boundary.

Prepare before the intention

• ◆GhuslA full bath is the Sunnah of ihram — the Prophet ﷺ bathed for it (Tirmidhi 830).
• ◆Groom firstTrim nails and remove unwanted hair now — both are forbidden once ihram begins.
• ◆Perfume the body, never the garmentsAisha (RA) perfumed the Prophet ﷺ before his ihram — on the skin, before the intention only.
• ◆Dress before the miqatOn flights from India, wear ihram at the airport or well before the crew announces the miqat approach.

• ◆MenTwo white unstitched cloths — izar around the waist, rida over the shoulders. Nothing on the head; sandals that leave the ankle bone bare.
• ◆WomenHer ordinary modest clothing, any colour. Head covered as usual — only the tied niqab and fitted gloves are set aside in ihram.

Know your miqat

• ◆Flying from IndiaYour plane crosses Yalamlam or Qarn al-Manazil — be in ihram and make the intention before the announcement.
• ◆From MadinahDhul-Hulayfah (Abyar ʻAli), minutes from the Prophet's masjid — the miqat with the longest queue of blessings.
• ◆Already in MakkahStep out to Masjid ʻAishah at Tanʻim — the nearest point outside the haram — and enter ihram there.

The niyyah of Umrah

Step 2 · The Talbiyah — The pilgrim's call

When Ibrahim (AS) was commanded to call humanity to the House, he asked how his voice could reach them. The talbiyah is your answer arriving, forty centuries later.

• ◆MenRaise your voice — "Jibril came to me and commanded that my companions raise their voices with the talbiyah" (Abu Dawud 1814).
• ◆WomenRecite softly, audible to yourself — the same words, the same standing before Allah.

Step 3 · Enter the Haram — First sight of the Kaaba

You are about to see the House you have prayed toward your whole life. Enter the way the moment deserves — unhurried, with wudu, heart gathered.

• ◆Walk with calmNo rushing, no pushing — sakinah is the dress code of the haram.
• ◆Let the Kaaba arriveKeep your gaze soft until the courtyard opens and the House stands before you.

Step 4 · Tawaf — Seven circuits of the Kaaba

Seven circuits around the House, counter-clockwise, beginning and ending at the Black Stone — the orbit every prophet from Ibrahim onward has walked.

How tawaf flows

• ◆Be in wudu — tawaf is prayer in motion.
• ◆Men: bare the right shoulder (idtibaʻ) for all seven circuits.
• ◆Start at the Black Stone line: face the Stone, raise your hand toward it and say "Bismillahi wallahu akbar."
• ◆Circle with the Kaaba on your left. Men walk briskly (ramal) for the first three circuits only.
• ◆At the Yamani corner: touch it if effortless — never kiss it, never fight for it.
• ◆Between the Yamani corner and the Stone, recite "Rabbana atina…" — the only dua fixed to a place in tawaf.
• ◆After the seventh circuit, cover the shoulder — tawaf is complete.

• ◆MenRamal (brisk step, first three circuits) and idtibaʻ (bared shoulder) are for men, in this tawaf only.
• ◆WomenWalk normally throughout — no ramal, no idtibaʻ, and the inner rows in heavy crowd are better avoided.

Step 5 · Maqam Ibrahim — Two rakʻah of gratitude

Behind you: seven circuits. Before you: the stone Ibrahim (AS) stood on while the walls rose. Allah made his footprint a prayer place until the end of time.

Two rakʻah of gratitude

• ◆Pray two rakʻah behind the maqam if there is space — anywhere in the masjid counts when it is crowded.
• ◆First rakʻah: al-Kafirun after al-Fatihah. Second: al-Ikhlas — as the Prophet ﷺ prayed (Muslim 1218).
• ◆Keep it brief — the space belongs to every pilgrim after you.

Step 6 · Zamzam — Drink with intention

Under the courtyard runs the spring that answered a mother's desperation with four thousand years of water. Drink before saʻi — deeply, and with intention.

• ◆Drink your fill"It is blessed — it is food that satisfies" (Muslim 2473). The Prophet ﷺ drank Zamzam standing (Bukhari 1637).
• ◆Drink with a requestHealing, knowledge, steadfastness — name it as you drink. The water is for what it is drunk for.
• ◆Carry some onwardFill a small bottle — saʻi is long, and Zamzam between laps revives.

Step 7 · Saʻi — Between Safa & Marwah

Hajar (RA) ran this valley seven times searching for water for her son. Allah so honoured her search that He wrote it into every pilgrimage until the Hour — you are walking in a mother's footsteps.

How saʻi flows

• ◆Climb Safa until the Kaaba is visible; face it, praise Allah, and raise your hands.
• ◆Say the tahlil three times — with your own duas between each round.
• ◆Walk to Marwah. Men jog lightly between the two green lights; women walk.
• ◆Safa → Marwah is one lap. Marwah → Safa is the second.
• ◆Repeat the dhikr and dua on each mount, every lap.
• ◆The seventh lap ends on Marwah — saʻi is complete.
• ◆Between the mounts no text is fixed: dhikr, Qur'an, or dua in your own tongue.

On Safa & Marwah

Step 8 · Halq or Taqsir — Release from ihram

One act remains. The hair falls, the ihram lifts, and you stand forgiven — the Prophet ﷺ prayed three times for the men who shave, and once for those who trim.

• ◆MenHalq — shaving the whole head — carries the triple dua of the Prophet ﷺ. Taqsir (an even trim all around) also completes the Umrah.
• ◆WomenGather the hair and cut a fingertip's length from the ends — never a shave.

Finishing well

• ◆Use a licensed barberFresh-blade barbershops ring the Marwah exit — insist on a new blade.
• ◆Ihram comes offEvery restriction lifts — perfume, stitched clothes, all of it. Change, rest, and thank Allah.
• ◆Ask for acceptanceRabbana taqabbal minna — the builders' own dua, for the walk you just completed.

Journey complete

You have walked every step from the miqat to the falling of the hair. May Allah accept your Umrah and write you among His answered guests.

Carry it home

• ◆Keep one habitThe most beloved deeds are the most consistent, even if small (Bukhari 6464). Guard one thing from this journey.
• ◆The road home has a dhikrAyibuna, ta'ibuna, ʻabiduna, li-Rabbina hamidun — on every rise of the way back (Bukhari 1797).

Fiqh & Wisdom — Why Umrah?

Know the journey before you walk it.

• ◆An expiation between Umrahs"Umrah to Umrah is an expiation for the sins between them, and an accepted Hajj has no reward but Paradise." The journey itself washes the slate. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1773)
• ◆Ramadan multiplies it"Umrah in Ramadan is equal to Hajj with me." One journey in the blessed month carries the reward of pilgrimage in the Prophet's ﷺ own company. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1863)
• ◆You travel as a guest"The guests of Allah are three: the warrior in His cause, the one on Hajj, and the one on Umrah" — a narration graded hasan. Guests are hosted, and guests are given what they ask. (Sunan Ibn Majah 2892)

The four essentials

• ◆1 · Ihram from the miqatEnter the state of consecration — intention and talbiyah — before crossing the miqat boundary for your route. Everything that follows rests on this door.
• ◆2 · TawafSeven circuits of the Kaaba, beginning and ending at the Black Stone, with wudu, the Kaaba on your left.
• ◆3 · SaʻiSeven lengths between Safa and Marwah, beginning at Safa — walking where Hajar (RA) ran.
• ◆4 · Halq or taqsirShaving or shortening the hair releases you from ihram and seals the Umrah. The schools differ over which acts are pillars and which are obligations — the sequence above is agreed by all.

Ihram restrictions

• ◆No cutting hair or nailsFrom the moment ihram begins until halq or taqsir, no hair is removed and no nails are clipped — "do not shave your heads until the offering reaches its place" (Qur'an 2:196).
• ◆No perfumeNo scent on body or clothing after ihram begins — perfume the body before the intention, as the Prophet ﷺ did. Unscented soap is the safe travel companion. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1539)
• ◆Men: nothing stitched to fit, nothing on the headTwo unstitched cloths only — no shirts, trousers, underwear or fitted shoes covering the ankle bone, and no cap, turban or hood. An umbrella or the shade of a bus roof is fine: it is the worn head cover that is forbidden.
• ◆No marriage, intimacy or foreplayThe muhrim neither marries, proposes, nor approaches his spouse intimately. Obscenity and quarrelling are stripped away too: "no rafath, no fusuq, no jidal during Hajj" (2:197).
• ◆No huntingLand game may not be hunted, pointed out, or helped toward capture while in ihram — "O you who believe, do not kill game while you are in ihram" (5:95).
• ◆If a restriction is brokenBroken out of genuine need (illness, injury) → a fidyah of fasting, feeding or sacrifice is due (Qur'an 2:196). Broken forgetfully → most scholars excuse the forgetful for perfume and clothing. Ask a scholar at the haram; the offices near the gates exist for exactly this.

Women's questions

• ◆Ihram is her ordinary modest dressAny colour, any clean garment — there is no prescribed white and no special clothing for a woman's ihram. The restriction is specific: no niqab tied over the face and no fitted gloves while in ihram. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1838)
• ◆The talbiyah is spoken softlyMen raise their voices; a woman recites so that she herself hears it. Her whole journey otherwise mirrors the men's — same steps, same duas, same reward.
• ◆If menses arrive mid-journeyThe Prophet ﷺ told Aisha (RA), when her cycle began on the road: "Do everything the pilgrim does — except tawaf of the House until you are pure." Ihram, talbiyah, dhikr and dua all continue; only tawaf (and the saʻi that follows it) waits. (Sahih al-Bukhari 305)

Common mistakes

• ◆Fighting the crowd to kiss the StoneKissing the Black Stone is a sunnah; sparing Muslims your elbows is an obligation. The Prophet ﷺ performed tawaf on his camel and simply pointed toward the corner. In a crowd, pointing IS the Sunnah. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1612)
• ◆Touching every corner and wallOnly two corners receive istilam — the Black Stone and the Yamani corner. Wiping the walls, the door, or the maqam's glass case for blessing has no basis in the Sunnah.
• ◆A fixed dua for each circuitNo authentic narration assigns dua number three to circuit three. Between the corners, "Rabbana atina…" is sourced — the rest of tawaf is yours: Qur'an, dhikr, your own language, your own needs.
• ◆Loud group duas in tawafOne leader chanting and a group answering drowns the worship of everyone around and was never the practice of the companions. Whisper — He hears.
• ◆Living it through the lensA phone raised for every circuit turns worship into content. Take the one photo, then put the screen away — the Kaaba is meant for your eyes.

Stay well

• ◆Hydrate relentlesslyMakkah heat is dry and deceptive. Zamzam is everywhere in the haram — drink at every pass, and carry a bottle for the walk back.
• ◆Break in your footwearYou will walk several kilometres in tawaf and saʻi alone. Worn-in sandals, kept in a shoe bag you carry, spare you blisters and the hunt for lost footwear.
• ◆Shade, rest, and realistic pacingAn umbrella for the courtyard, rest before tawaf rather than after the flight, and no shame in a wheelchair — attendants and free carts serve the upper floors. Worship, not endurance, is the goal.
• ◆Guard your health in the crowdA light mask in dense crowds, hand-washing before eating, and your regular medicines in your hand luggage with a copy of the prescription.

After Umrah

• ◆Keep the changeThe sign of an accepted deed is the good deed that follows it. "The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if small." Guard one habit from this journey — the five prayers on time outweigh every souvenir. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464)
• ◆Madinah is its own intentionVisiting the Prophet's ﷺ masjid is not a rite of Umrah — it is its own beloved journey: "Do not set out except to three masjids…" One prayer there is worth a thousand elsewhere. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1189)
• ◆And when the longing returns"Umrah to Umrah is an expiation for what is between them" — the door stays open. Many pilgrims book the next journey the week they land; the heart that has seen the Kaaba rarely settles. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1773)
