The Month of Ramadan

"The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an — a guidance for the people. So whoever sights the month, let him fast it." (Qur'an, Al-Baqarah 2:185)

• ◆The gates openWhen Ramadan begins, "the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained." Every night Allah frees souls from the Fire — a season made for return. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1899)
• ◆Fast the daysFasting Ramadan is the fourth pillar: no food, drink or intimacy from true dawn to sunset. "Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his past sins are forgiven." (Sahih al-Bukhari 38)
• ◆Stand the nights — TaraweehEach night after Isha, the taraweeh prayer revives the month. "Whoever stands (in prayer) during Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his past sins are forgiven." Pray behind an imam or at home. (Sahih al-Bukhari 37)
• ◆Suhoor & iftarTake the pre-dawn meal — "eat suhoor, for in it is blessing" — and hasten to break the fast at sunset. The Ummah stays upon good so long as they break the fast promptly. (Bukhari 1923, 1957)

The Last Ten Nights

"The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months." (Qur'an, Al-Qadr 97:3)

• ◆Seek Laylatul QadrIt is hidden in the odd nights of the last ten — the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th — so seek it across them all. A single night of worship in it outweighs eighty-three years. (Sahih al-Bukhari 2017)
• ◆The Prophet's ﷺ last tenAisha (RA) said that when the last ten began, the Prophet ﷺ "would tighten his waist-belt, spend the night in worship, and wake his family." Give these nights everything you have. (Sahih al-Bukhari 2024)
• ◆I'tikaf — retreat to the masjidThe Prophet ﷺ secluded himself in the masjid for the last ten days, devoting them wholly to prayer, Qur'an and dua. Even a short, intended i'tikaf revives the sunnah. (Sahih al-Bukhari 2025)

The Dua of the Night

Zakat al-Fitr & Eid

• ◆Zakat al-FitrThe Prophet ﷺ made it obligatory on every Muslim — young or old, male or female — one sa' (about 2.5–3 kg) of the staple food of the land: dates, barley, wheat, rice. The head of a household pays it for each dependant. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1503)
• ◆Give it before the Eid prayerIts purpose is to purify the fast and to feed the poor so that they too can rejoice on Eid. Pay it before the Eid prayer — a day or two early is fine and recommended; after the prayer it becomes ordinary charity.
• ◆Eid al-FitrThe festival of breaking the fast opens with takbir and the Eid prayer in congregation. Bathe, wear your best, eat something sweet before setting out, and greet one another — "Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum" (May Allah accept from us and you).
