Who is a Mahram?
A mahram is a male relative permanently forbidden in marriage — he accompanies women for their protection during travel.
- ◆HusbandPrimary mahram. His consent and presence fulfils the requirement.
- ◆FatherBiological or adoptive father.
- ◆BrotherFull brother or half-brother (same father or same mother).
- ◆Adult SonMust be adult (baligh). Stepson also qualifies.
- ◆Paternal/Maternal UncleFather's brother or mother's brother.
Saudi 2024 Regulations
- ◆Group Travel OptionA recognised Umrah agent can facilitate group travel for eligible women. The agent acts as a responsible guardian throughout.
- ◆Women over 45 (2024 Rule)Saudi Arabia allows women aged 45+ to perform Umrah without a mahram if travelling in an organised group and with a no-objection letter from their mahram.
Special Cases
- ◆WidowMay travel with any adult male relative who is a mahram.
- ◆Divorced womanSame rule applies — requires a mahram.
- ◆Husband unable to travelAnother mahram may accompany her.
