The Day of Friday

The Sunnah Checklist

Each act of the Friday Sunnah carries its own virtue.

  • GhuslGhusl on the day of Jumu'ah is a duty upon every adult — the Prophet ﷺ emphasised arriving clean, in one's best state. (Sahih al-Bukhari 877)
  • MiswakThe Prophet ﷺ said: "Were it not that I would burden my Ummah, I would have ordered them to use the siwak before every prayer." (Sahih al-Bukhari 887)
  • Best dress"O children of Adam, take your adornment at every place of prayer." Wear your best clothes for Jumu'ah — it is your weekly Eid. (Qur'an, Al-A'raf 7:31)
  • PerfumeThe Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever takes a bath on Friday, applies perfume if he has it, and wears his best clothes..." has the greatest reward. (Sunan Abi Dawud 343)
  • Go earlyThe one who goes in the first hour — it is as if he sacrificed a camel. The second hour, a cow. The third, a ram. The fourth, a hen. The fifth, an egg. (Sahih al-Bukhari 881)
  • 2 rak'ahWhen one of you comes on Friday while the imam is delivering the khutbah, let him pray two brief rak'ah before sitting. (Sahih Muslim 875)
  • Sit closeThe angels stand at the doors of the masjid recording the first to arrive, then the next. Sit close to the imam to hear the khutbah. (Sahih al-Bukhari 929)
  • Be silentIf you say to your companion "listen" while the imam is speaking, you have engaged in idle talk — and that erases the Jumu'ah reward. (Sahih al-Bukhari 934)
  • No steppingA man came stepping over shoulders on Friday. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Sit down — you have annoyed people and come late." (Sunan Abi Dawud 1118)
  • Al-KahfWhoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday, a light shines for him between the two Fridays. (Al-Mustadrak 3392)
  • SalawatIncrease your salawat upon me on the day of Jumu'ah, for your salawat are presented to me. (Sunan Abi Dawud 1047)
  • Dua hourOn Friday there is an hour when, if a Muslim asks Allah for something good, He will surely grant it. Many scholars hold it is the last hour before Maghrib. (Sahih al-Bukhari 935)

Read Surah Al-Kahf

A light from this Friday to the next.

الكهف

Al-Kahf

The Cave

Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday, a light shines for him between the two Fridays. (Al-Mustadrak 3392)

Salawaat — Durood Ibrahim

The salawat the Prophet ﷺ himself taught — recited in every tashahhud. Two sentences: the salah (mercy) then the barakah (blessing). (Sahih al-Bukhari 3370)

O Allah, send Your mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your mercy upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

Set a daily salawat goal and count each recitation — increase your salawat especially on the day of Jumu'ah.
