The etiquette of sneezing

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ / يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ / يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

Alhamdu lillaah / Yarhamukallaah / Yahdeekumul-laahu wa yuslihu baalakum

The sneezer says: All praise is for Allah. His companion replies: May Allah have mercy on you. The sneezer responds: May Allah guide you and set your affairs right.

When angry — it extinguishes rage

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

A'oodhu billaahi minash-shaytaanir-rajeem

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan.

Kaffarat al-majlis — expiation when leaving any gathering

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ

Subhaanakal-laahumma wa bihamdik, ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illaa ant, astaghfiruka wa atoobu ilayk

Glory be to You, O Allah, and all praise. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You.

Quietly, on seeing someone afflicted — you will be spared it

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي عَافَانِي مِمَّا ابْتَلَاكَ بِهِ وَفَضَّلَنِي عَلَى كَثِيرٍ مِمَّنْ خَلَقَ تَفْضِيلًا

Alhamdu lillaahil-ladhee 'aafaanee mimmab-talaaka bihi wa faddalanee 'alaa katheerin mimman khalaqa tafdeelaa

All praise is for Allah who spared me from that which He tested you with, and favoured me greatly over much of His creation.

For your host after eating

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمْ فِيمَا رَزَقْتَهُمْ وَاغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَارْحَمْهُمْ

Allahumma baarik lahum feemaa razaqtahum, waghfir lahum, warhamhum

O Allah, bless them in what You have provided them, forgive them, and have mercy on them.

Congratulating the newly married

بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِي خَيْرٍ

Baarakallaahu laka wa baaraka 'alayk, wa jama'a baynakumaa fee khayr

May Allah bless you and shower blessings upon you, and bring you together in goodness.
